Hey all! This is something I've started where I discuss some things that stood out to me the past month -- a monthly newsletter if you will.
Each month I'll discuss some things for you to LOOK at in terms of fashion, film, and television, new music for you to LISTEN to, and some topics for you to LEARN about.
Here's a few things that stood out to me last month in July as we enter August!...
LOOK
2024 OLYMPICS
Okay wow! Where to begin, let's start with the G.O.A.T. I did not watch the 2020 Olympics (because I was busy in the middle of an existential crisis.) But, in 2020 our G.O.A.T. Simone Biles had to pull out because she was experiencing the "twisties" and feared the would injure herself. She was met with a TON of backlash. People calling her a quitter, a disappointment, and much worse, which is absolutely ridiculous.
This Olympics, she shut those haters the FUCK UP by winning THREE gold medals, and even one silver! Simone has attributed her success this time around to her therapist and has been very open about her mental health journey, which is refreshing to see!
On the other hand, my girl Coco Gauf has experienced a series of upsets, most notably during her singles match. I'm no tennis expert, but to ME it looks like Coco was accurate in her outrage. For some reason, Coco is always met with negativity and always faces poorly made calls by the umpire. A.K.A. just another day in the life of a black woman, no matter the status.
Overall, despite the drama, women have been kicking ass! Shout out to Noah Lyles and Cole Hocker too! OMG and how can I forget about my QUEEN Celine Dion making her triumphant return to the stage during the opening ceremony. I can't wait to see how the rest of the 2024 Olympics plays out!
DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE
The Deadpool series is so refreshing because the superhero films are becoming a bit repetitive. I plan on seeing the film this weekend, so this is a spoiler free review. But thanks to TikTok, I have seen some clips and I'm excited to see some of the surprises that are in store!
Y2K SLOGAN SHIRTS
Y2K Fashion is still going strong! One trend that I loooved even as a kid was t-shirts with slogans on them. Obviously as a kid, I couldn't wear the more crude shirts, but now I'm a grown up, so I can do whatever I want!
LISTEN
ICE SPICE'S SH*TTY ALBUM
Are Ice Spice's 15 minutes of fame finally up? Now, I have not even bothered to listen to this album, so this isn't necessarily an album review. This more so is about the negative reviews and the consequences of promoting the career of an industry plant. I can't lie, her first few singles caught my attention, but somebody needs to tell me why this girl keeps talking about poopy???
There are just so many other female rappers with more talent in their pinky toe nail than ice spice. Doechii, Flo Milli, JT, and Rico Nasty alone can rap circles around Ice Spice. For at least three out of four of those rappers, we know why their careers haven't reached the same heights... yet!
VULTURES 2?
Ye and Ty Dolla Sign's second joint album, Vultures 2 finally dropped, and if you're like me you probably didn't even realize. I've been a life long Kanye West fan, however lately the songs aren't hitting the way they used to. It actually makes me sad TBH.
I'm not excusing Kanye's problematic behavior, but I think this is a good example of how lack of a positive foundation and focus on getting one's mental health in check can fundamentally change the course of someone's life, sometimes in a negative way. Kanye will always be a legend, but I don't think this album will go down in history.
Anywho, go ahead and take a listen yourself, I might be wrong!
JPEGMAFIA NEW ALBUM
An album I HAVE been enjoying is JPEGMAFIA's new album, "I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU". Truthfully, I'm not surprised, because his last few albums have been absolute bangers. I know his music isn't necessarily appealing to all audiences, but if it's up your alley, take a listen below!

UGH! I am so tired of the Kardashian/Jenner Family!!!! From an unbiased standpoint, I can absolutely respect the hustle, plenty of people over the course of Hollywood's mere existence has been given 15 minutes of fame, but very few are able to monopolize it and turn it into an empire like the Kardashian's have. However at some point, it has to be enough right?!
Like at what point do they just sit back and enjoy their lives? I mean... their show on Hulu is SO boring I have no idea why on earth it's still on the air. It's not like they NEED the money. It's clearly just another platform for them to promote their brands and business endeavors. Even then, most of the stuff shown in the show happened A YEAR AGO! Don't een get me started on the way they've projected their own negative body image onto young women throughout the years. They just need to go away for a bit, like... ENOUGH!
MAMALA & PAPA WALZ 2024!
WOW! What a difference a few weeks makes huh?! For a moment, it was looking veryyy bleak, until Biden made one of the best choices he's made in a very long time. Even then, many people doubted Kamala Harris, but her campaign has really turned things around for the better. Especially now, after adding her VP candidate Tim Walz to the ticket.
However! This is NOT the time to sit back and relax. We must continue to push forward and fight the good fight up until the very last minute. I know many POC were uneasy with Kamala being nominated as president, however that is the issue with misinformation and why it's important to do your OWN research OUTSIDE of social media. It was rumored that Kamala put thousands of men in prison for weed related offenses, when in reality it was only 45 men of various ethnicities. Now of course, no politician is innocent. But this is NOT the time to be contrarian or to not vote at all. Like, don't be fucking stupid... this is real life... not social media!
